NK/T-Cell lymphoma in nose is a rare lymphoid neoplasm which in the past has been grouped with a variety of granulomatous diseases. It is almost associated with Epstein Barr Virus (EBV). The disease can occur in patients of any age but is most common in persons between 40-50 years of age. In some cases, the problem may masquerade as a local indolent ulcer or chronic sinusitis for many years. In this condition, extensive local tissue destruction and inflammation can cause perforation of the palate or nasal septum which is spread to the nasopharynx, oral cavity and paranasal sinus. It may also cause retinal detachment. Central nervous system involvement is rare in this case. This lymphoma remains localised in the nasal primary site in many cases with little documented nodal spread. The disease tends to metastasize to the skin, gut, testis, ovaries and muscle. Bone marrow involvement is not common.
WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF NK/T-CELL LYMPHOMA IN NOSE?
Extra-nodal NK/T-cell lymphoma is usually found only in the area around the nose when it is diagnosed. This means it is most often at stage 1E or stage 2E, where E stands for extra-nodal. Some people have more widespread lymphoma (stage 3 or 4) when they are diagnosed.
Symptoms are:
Blocked nose
Weepy eyes
Swelling on the face
Problem in swallowing
Problems in the teeth
TREATMENT
T-cell lymphomas are rare. So, according to modern medicine, it is difficult to determine which treatment will give the best outcome.
Modern treatment includes radiotherapy of the areas affected by lymphoma particularly if the lymphoma is localised to the area around the nose. If the lymphoma is widespread as in the stages 3 and 4, then patient is likely to have chemotherapy alone but it is common for extra-nodal NK/T-cell lymphoma to relapse after being its remission. Sometimes lymphoma doesn’t respond to the treatment.
