Child Health

Kids in today’s world are facing much pressures than ever before. Eating wholesome and healthy diet is the basis of mental and physical health in the growing child and there is also a link between immunity and digestion.

CHILD HEALTH ACCORDING TO AYURVEDA:

Ayurveda has a special branch of science known as Bal Roga which deals with all the child related disorders.

According to Ayurveda, health of child depends on healthy immunity. Healthy immunity is a result of strong digestion. Strong digestion plays an important role in child health as there is a need to develop strong bones, healthy blood, organs and brain tissue.

The healthier a child is, there is more ojas and vice versa. Ojas helps in preventing the disease and maintains the balance of doshas as well as dhatus.

What are the types of Child Problems?

SOME OF THE COMMON CHILD PROBLEMS ARE:

1. LOW MEMORY

Due to low memory, children feel like failures in school which leads to low esteem and frustration in them.

According to Ayurveda, there are three aspects of mental ability: the power of learning, the power of retention and the ability to recall.

  1. Ayurveda mentions that wrong eating habits are also a cause of learning problems and low memory in children as the children are more sensitive as compared to adults.

  2. When these three mental functions are not in balance, then learning problems can crop up in child.

  3. Food laced with chemicals, preservatives, flavours, colours directly impact child’s memory because these foods do not nourish the mind and any nutritional deficiency can result in diminished memory function.

2. ADHD (ATTENTION DEFICIT HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER)

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder is defined as a behavioural disorder of children.

  1. It is characterized by increased distractibility, difficulty in sustaining attention, decreased self-inhibitory capacity, motor over-activity and restlessness.

  2. Ayurveda defines it as a Vata-Pitta disorder. If Vyana Vata is obstructed by Prana Vata, then there will be loss of all the senses which results in loss of strength as well as memory.

  3. The symptoms of Pitta dosha in ADHD include aggressiveness, anger, discolouration of eyes and skin, increase in temperature etc.

  4. Ayurvedic treatment of ADHD includes balancing Vata dosha in mind as well as in nervous system, cleansing of Ama that builds up in the body and in the mind and building healthy levels of Ojas.

3. RECURRENT TONSILLITIS

Tonsillitis refers to the inflammation of glands at the back of the throat known as pharyngeal tonsils.

  1. It affects people of all age groups but most commonly occurs in growing children.

  2. In children, this condition is a result of compromised immunity. Due to weak immunity, whenever they get exposed to dust or pollution or eat anything sour or cold, or a minor infection can be a cause of recurrent Tonsillitis.

  3. The symptoms of Recurrent Tonsillitis are high fever, pain while swallowing, oozing pus, chills, pain in the ear on the affected area.

4. STUNTED GROWTH

Child growth is recognized as important public health indicator for monitoring nutritional status and health in population.

Children who suffer from stunted growth due to poor diet or recurrent infections tend to have more frequent episodes of diarrhoea and are more susceptible to other infectious diseases such as pneumonia, malaria etc.
