What is Cervical spondylosis?


The term cervical in connection with our human body is related to the bones or vertebra that are present in the upper part of our spine. There are 7 cervical vertebrae in our neck region that help in the proper balance of motion and gait of our head and neck.


Cervical spondylosis is a disorderly condition of the bones of our neck in which the age related wear and tear of the bones and the cartilages makes the movement of neck and the skull above it difficult and painful. The spinal disks holding the vertebrae together shrink in size due to dehydration resulting in lessening the inter vertebrae gap and causing pain and discomfort.


What are the causes of Cervical spondylosis?

  • The usual and general cause known for cervical spondylosis is AGE. With growing age the spinal disks become weak and wear down causing the bone deformity.

  • Other causes seen are postural like sitting long hours with head bent over books or laptop may lead to pain and stiffness in the neck with gradual deformity.

  • In some cases herniated disks may be the cause that excites cervical spondylosis

  • Smoking is a major factor that may cause bone wear and tear

  • Inactivity and stiffness in the body

  • Sometimes genetic factors play a major role

  • Being overweight is one important reason

What are the symptoms of cervical Spondylosis?

  • The usual symptoms presented are stiffness in the neck while sitting and especially after waking up in the morning.

  • Pain that varies in degree depending upon the level of bone deformity.

  • Pain in the arms and the fingers that has become a regular problem for some days should not be neglected.

  • Headaches and vertigo. Some may also complain of nausea.

  • Pain in the shoulder blades.

HERBS IN AYURVEDA FOR CERVICAL SPONDYLOSIS


WITHANIA SOMNIFERA
  • Ashwagandha is a pure ayurvedic formulation that contains the concentrated properties of the raw herb in a small capsule to enrich the body.

The boswellic acids that have anti-inflammatory properties have been unidentified in various researches.

The arthritis forms relieved by boswellic acids are rheumatoid arthritis, gout, spondylosis, osteoarthritis, joint pain, etc.


ZINGIBER OFFICINALE (SONTH)
  • Also known as Dry ginger.

  • A wonderful anti-inflammatory agent used by Ayurvedic physicians worldwide.

  • Used for pain and inflammations.

  • Relieves from cervical spondylosis.

TINOSPORA CORDIFLORA (GILOY)
  • Tinospora, the botanical name for Giloy is well known as an immune moderator.

  • Its Sanskrit name ‘Amrita’ stands for elixir for long span life.

  • Very effective against auto-immune disorders like rheumatoid arthritis and gout.


LEPIDIUM SATIVUM

This herb is one of the best nutritive and anti-vata herbs in Ayurveda. Vata is the leading cause of body pains, back pain and joint pains. It pacifies the Kapha and Vata doshas effectively, leading to instant pain relief. In case of fractures, it helps in the easy union of bones in the body. It helps to improve the functioning of the digestive and nervous systems.


NIGELLA SATIVA

Black cumin is the common name of Kalonji. These seeds have been used in India for flavoring and improving digestion especially in cold climates. The seeds have aromatic, carminative, anthelmintic, diuretic, stimulant, and diaphoretic properties. The seeds are vata pacifying and very useful in relieving body pains, back pain and stiff joints.


TRIGONELLA FOENUM GRAECUM

Its common name is fenugreek. These seeds have been used as a spice and the leaves of the plant are consumed as a vegetable in India, Middle East and China. It is having anti-inflammatory, vata relieving properties. It’s very good to relieve body pains. Its fresh leaves are useful in the management of flatulence, indigestion and sluggish liver. It enhances enzyme production which aids digestion. It relieves Vata energy in the body which causes stiffness and pain. It is effective in relieving muscle pains, body pains, stiffness, joint pains, and fatigue.
